Science Europe Calls for Balanced Implementation of Do No Significant Harm Principle

Science Europe, along with the European University Association (EUA) and the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER), supports the environmental goals set by the EU's sustainable finance taxonomy regulation. However, Science Europe calls for caution regarding the broad application of the Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) principle to all projects under European research and innovation (R&I) framework programmes, including Horizon Europe.

In 2023, Science Europe continues working with its Member Organisations to reinforce the collective capacity to communicate research more effectively and to enhance the communication of science to society. Science Communication emerged as a new priority area in itself in the framework of Science Europe’s Strategy Plan 2021–2026.

The R&I Framework Programme We Want for Europe

Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe have been crucial instruments to boost European scientific excellence and collaboration, and to further develop the European Research Area (ERA).

Horizon Europe’s budget must be protected from any reduction or redirection. Its successor’s budget should be increased.

These are among the key messages of Science Europe's response to the Public Consultation on Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.

CoARA Up and Running

The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is now up and running since its official launch on 1st December at the Constitutive Assembly meeting of the Coalition after a year for intense drafting and development where Science Europe played a central role in both the Drafting Team and Interim Secretariat.

CoARA officially launched!

The Constitutive Assembly of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) took place on 1 December 2022. The official launch brought together the organisations that had signed the Agreement for Reforming Research Assessment by 17 November and confirmed their membership in the coalition.

10th World Science Forum Discusses Science for Social Justice and Adopts Top Declaration

The 10th World Science Forum (WSF) took place at the International Convention Center in Cape Town, South Africa, 5–9 December 2022. The WSF is a forum that addresses the social, economic relevance, influence and responsibilities of science, and the 2022 edition addressed the issue of “Science for Social Justice”. The event was organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), Member of Science Europe that recently re-joint our organisation, in cooperation with UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP).

Science|Business Conference on Talent Retention

Science|Business and Science Europe co-organised a conference on ‘Talent retention: How can Europe tackle the challenges of brain drain and capacity building in EU13 countries?’. This event closed a series of workshops organised by Science Europe on spreading excellence and widening participation in European R&I programmes.

Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) launched, Steering Board elected

The Constitutive Assembly of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) took place on 1 December 2022. The Assembly, which brought together the organisations that signed the Agreement for Reforming Research Assessment by 17 November and have confirmed membership in the coalition, officially launched CoARA and decided on the terms of its governance and operations.
