A Vision and Framework for Research Cultures

26>26 Mar. 2025
THE PROGRAMME

According to a 2018 definition from the Royal Society, “Research culture encompasses the behaviours, values, expectations, attitudes and norms of our research communities. It influences researchers’ career paths and determines the way that research is conducted and communicated.” We talk about research cultures in the plural to acknowledge the wide range of cultures that exist in different research environments.

About the event

The culmination of several years of discussions, activities, positions, and events – on 26 March 2025, Science Europe presented its Vision and Framework for Research Cultures. This document brings together a wide range of research policy advances towards the shared objective of supporting knowledge advancement and enabling the quality and impact of research.

This new Vision & Framework offers a comprehensive and long-term perspective to define institutional policies to support the evolution of research cultures in Europe and globally, embedding and further reinforcing Science Europe’s shared values. It builds upon a range of recent policy activities from supporting diversity to promoting attractive careers in research, and from embedding open science to ensuring integrity and ethics in research practice. A supporting framework sets out conditions to enable effective action and Science Europe makes a number of commitments to take and support action towards the shared values.

Format of the event

Following a welcome by Science Europe's Vice-President Javier Moreno Fuentes, an overview of Science Europe's activities under the strategic priority of ‘Research Culture’ was provided by Senior Policy Officer James Morris. The co-Chairs of the Working Group on Research Culture, Jolanta Šinkūnienė and Sean Sapcariu, then presented the new Vision and Framework document.

A panel of invited experts from key stakeholder groups discussed the document with each other and the audience, focusing on policies and practices for fostering institutional and systemic evolution of research cultures and consdering what steps need to be taken – and by whom – to reach the vision presented.
