The European Conference on Diamond Open Access, taking place on 11–12 May 2027 in Dublin, Ireland, will bring together research funders, research organisations, publishers, policy makers, and the wider research community to advance equitable, sustainable, and community-owned scholarly publishing. Building on the progress of the 2022 Action Plan for Diamond Open Access, the conference will explore shared priorities, strengthen collaboration, and shape the future of Diamond Open Access in Europe.
About the Conference
Since the publication of the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access in 2022, supported by the French Presidency of the EU, significant progress has been made across Europe in developing the infrastructures, services, and communities needed to support equitable, sustainable, and community-owned scholarly publishing, free of charges for authors and readers.
The Action Plan is in line with the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, the Conclusions of the Council of the European Union of June 2022 on research assessment and implementation of Open Science and the Conclusions of the Council of the European Union of May 2023 on high-quality, transparent, open, trustworthy and equitable scholarly publishing.
Building on this momentum, the conference, organised by Diamond Ireland, the European Diamond Capacity Hub, the Health Research Board, Research Ireland, UNESCO and Science Europe, will bring together research funding and performing organisations, publishers, service providers, policy makers, and members of the wider research community.
Together they will reflect on achievements to date and identify shared priorities for the next phase of Diamond Open Access in Europe.
Over two days, participants will explore how to strengthen the European Diamond Open Access ecosystem, support collaboration and capacity building, and identify shared priorities for future policy and investment. The conference will also provide an opportunity to connect European developments with global initiatives, such as the Bengaluru Roadmap and Action Plan on Diamond Open Access, which will be followed up at the next Global Summit on Diamond Open Access in Indonesia later in 2027.
Hosted in Ireland, the European Diamond Open Access Conference will also be the framework for the launch of Diamond Ireland, the Irish National Capacity Centre for Diamond Open Access as an example of the growing momentum behind Diamond Open Access across Europe.
