Science Europe Endorses ALLEA's statement on Academic Freedom
Science Europe shares The European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities's (ALLEA) grave concerns over recent restrictions to academic freedoms enacted by the new U.S administration, imposing censorship and the cessation of funding for research programmes centred on climate change, gender studies, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
As highlighted in ALLEA's statement – which Science Europe fully endorses – academic freedom is a fundamental pillar of a free and democratic society. Freedom of enquiry is an essential coupling, along with freedom of speech, in the process of knowledge production and innovation. These new restrictions threaten widespread disruption to global research networks, injecting uncertainty into individual careers, long-established international relationships and collaborations, the autonomy of scientific institutions, and the transatlantic sharing of data.
Science Europe and its member organisations are committed to strengthening efforts to safeguard academic freedoms. In line with this commitment, Science Europe is actively forwarding recommendations for the upcoming 10th Research Framework Programme (FP10). These efforts aim to ensure a well-funded, inclusive, and independent research environment in Europe that supports international cooperation and excellence in research and innovation.
