Science Europe supports the call for open and barrier-free science collaboration between European countries, including Switzerland and the UK, made in the newly-launched Stick to Science initiative.

Science Europe Governing Board Member and RCN Executive Mari Sundli Tveit represented Science Europe at the Forum of Universities for the Future of Europe, reflecting on the role of universities in the Europe of the future.

In 2021, the European Commission conducted an extensive consultation on reforming the research assessment system. Science Europe and several of its members were involved in this consultation.

The report of the 2021 Science Europe High Level Workshop on the European Research Area, with a focus on Research Culture has just been published and can be read on our website.

Now in its 6th edition, the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap for 2021 includes 41 European Research Infrastructures which have already been implemented (Landmarks), and 22 RI Projects that are in their preparatory phase. This totals an investment of over 20 billion Euros. The 2021 edition includes 11 new research infrastructure projects.

In 1991, the Parliament (Seimas) of the Republic of Lithuania established an expert body to advise the Seimas and the Government on science policy issues.

Science Europe publishes the report of its 2021 High Level Workshop on the European Research Area (ERA), addressing issues on research culture.

On the occasion of the 2021 High Level Workshop, Science Europe celebrated its 10th anniversary and its achievements during that period.

At the recent SE General Assembly on 25 November 2021, the Science Europe Member Organisations elected the members of the Science Europe Governing Board for the next two-year mandate, 2021-2023.

On Wednesday, 24 November Science Europe held the 13th edition of its High Level Workshop on the European Research Area, with a focus, this year, on the topic of research culture.

From 1 to 12 November, United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) took place in Glasgow (UK), bringing together world leaders, scientists and activists to discuss how to accelerate actions towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Report on ‘Science for the Green Transition’ was published on 10 November 2021 as a follow up of the policy workshop co-organised by the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and Science Europe on 7 September 2021.

In December 2020, the EU knowledge community collectively welcomed the provision in Protocol I of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement for the UK to associate to Horizon Europe. Now, at the end of the first year of Horizon Europe’s implementation, the procedure to officialise the association is in a deadlock.

Science Europe welcomes the adoption by the Council of the European Union of the Conclusion on the future governance of the European Research Area and Recommendations on a Pact for Research and Innovation.
