In Memoriam: Matthias Koenig

It is with great sadness that Science Europe learned today of the passing of its former Governing Board member Matthias Koenig (1971–2026).

While he was Vice-President of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Matthias was engaged as a member of the Science Europe Governing Board for two consecutive terms, from 2021 to 2025. In that role, he contributed with valuable strategic input into the development of the association's missions and objectives. His contributions were always well-regarded by the Governing Board, General Assembly, and the Science Europe Office for being thoughtful, straight to the point, and constructively critical.

He was a professor of Empirical Macrosociology at the Max-Weber-Institute for Sociology at Heidelberg University, where his research covered sociological theory, human rights, religion, and migration, focusing on global and local dynamics of governing diversity.

A dedicated supporter of international research collaboration, he expressed how much he enjoyed working together with his European colleagues through Science Europe at the end of his second term as Governing Board Member, just two months ago. He indicated that the one thing he would miss most, were the relationships and friendships he nurtured along the way. In his own words: "I deeply feel that such personal relationships form the true foundation for European science co-operation and for European solidarity more broadly."

Science Europe extends its heartfelt condolences to Matthias' family, friends, and colleagues, and to those at DFG and the Max-Weber-Institute in particular. He will be deeply missed by all.
