A Practical Guide to Implementing Responsible Research Assessment at Research Funding Organizations

This report presents the outcomes of a collaborative workshop held during the 2025 Responsible Research in Action Unconference in Berlin, where diverse stakeholders worked together to translate the Science Europe Vision and Framework for Research Cultures into concrete actions. Through forward-looking analysis and backcasting exercises, participants co-developed ideas to help shape a more inclusive, ethical, and sustainable research culture across Europe.

Science Europe has responded to the European Commission Call-for-Evidence on a Fair Labour Mobility Package, emphasising that equitable and inclusive career and mobility opportunities for research professionals are central to the effectiveness, attractiveness, and quality of the European Research Area. The response builds on Science Europe’s long-standing commitment to improving research careers and mobility, as reflected in its previous policy positions and activities on careers and working conditions in research.

This evidence-informed briefing provides background information on the environmental impact and explains why it requires serious attention: not only from an environmental perspective, but also in light of other wider organisational and societal positive co-benefits that research organisations can realise by strengthening their efforts on environmental sustainability.

Science Europe has responded to the European Commission’s public consultation on the proposed European Research Area (ERA) Act, setting out the collective views of its Member Organisations on how the legislation can effectively strengthen framework conditions for research and innovation, while safeguarding academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and the diversity of national research systems.
