Science Europe calls for an immediate end to the violent repression of protests in Iran

Following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, on 16 September 2022, protests have been ongoing in Iran. The Iranian government started cracking down on the protesters and imposed a widespread internet blackout and nationwide restrictions on social media. Iranian security forces have repressed protests that took place in several universities across the country, firing live ammunition at students and occupying campuses.

Science Europe firmly condemns the violent response to the demonstrations, the violation of human rights, and the restriction of academic freedom.

It calls for the immediate end to the crackdown and to the deployment of security forces in universities, to the release of detained protestors, and to an impartial investigation into the death of Mahsa Amini. Science Europe stands behind women in Iran, supports the ongoing demonstrations, and expresses its solidarity with all victims of the repression.
