Role of Universities in the Future of Europe

Science Europe Governing Board member and Chief Executive at the Research Council of Norway (RCN) Mari Sundli Tveit represented Science Europe at the ‘Forum of Universities for the Future of Europe’ on Wednesday, 26 January 2022. Organised by the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, this event was ‘an opportunity for reflection on the role of universities in the Europe of the future and their contribution to its construction.’

Mari Sundli Tveit joined a round table discussion on world-class European universities. Together with representatives of the Guild of European Research-intensive Universities (The Guild) and the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) she discussed how European universities can attract talent and develop capacities within the global research and innovation landscape.

She highlighted that research performing and funding organisations strive to build and reinforce national capacity. A key question is how to do so while balancing the need to build global research collaboration and limiting the ‘brain drain’ of highly-skilled R&I professionals. Science Europe and its members influence global developments through participation in worldwide initiatives, such as the Global Research Council and other international organisations and networks.
