Science Europe Appointed to the Executive Board of the European Open Science Cloud

Science Europe has been appointed as one of 11 members of the new Executive Board of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

Announced today at the EOSC launch event in Vienna, the first meeting of the Executive Board are scheduled for early 2019. Other members of the Executive Board represent CESAER, CESSDA ERIC, EMBL, European Spallation Source ERIC, GEANT, OPENAIRE, and RDA as well as three independent experts. Science Europe will be represented by its Secretary General, Stephan Kuster, in this new role.

Science Europe has been actively involved in Open Science for many years, with its activities in areas such as Open Access, research data, as well as monitoring and contributing to the preparatory work towards the establishment of the EOSC, for example as a member of the Open Science Policy Platform (OSPP). One of its most recent activities, that aims to align research data management policies among funders and research performing organisations, has been developed in the light of the upcoming EOSC. The EOSC will have a significant influence on conducting research and sharing data in the future. Science Europe welcomes this opportunity to represent its Member Organisations and brings a wealth of a experience on the topic.

With the launch of the EOSC and its governance, the European Commission is officially handing over the main responsibility of putting EOSC into practice to the stakeholders. It will be among the tasks of the Executive Board to find solutions for the diverse aspects of EOSC (for example services, access & interface, data, rules, and architecture) as well as work towards a sustainable funding and business model for EOSC post 2020 when the funding under the current framework programme, Horizon 2020, will run out.
