Science Europe Commends Newly-formed EC for Acknowledging Importance of Research, Education and Culture

Science Europe would like to congratulate Ursula von der Leyen for her election as President of the European Commission (EC). We also would like to confirm our full support to Mariya Gabriel, new Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, following the approval of the new College of Commissioners by the European Parliament.

“Science Europe is looking forward to an effective EU governance by President von der Leyen and to collaborating with her and Commissioner Gabriel to strengthen the European Research Area,“ stresses Science Europe President, Marc Schiltz.

Research is crucial to the future of Europe. Research outcomes are key for the benefit of society. They address the societal and global challenges and usher current technologies towards a sustainable and digital transition. Research also underlies long-term economic growth. Science Europe therefore welcomes the addition of the words ‘research’, ‘education’ and ‘culture’ to Commissioner Gabriel’s portfolio title. This new title is an acknowledgement from President von der Leyen of the importance of research and researchers in Europe.

“A strong budget must be earmarked for research and innovation via the Horizon Europe programme, if the new Commission is to achieve its ambitious goals, including the Green Deal,” adds Lidia Borrell-Damian, Secretary General of Science Europe. “As part of the negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, Science Europe therefore calls for the EU institutions to agree on a budget of at least €120bn for Horizon Europe. Making Europe carbon neutral by 2050 is a top priority, and Horizon Europe has a key role in coordinating environment and climate research-related matters.”

Science Europe is looking forward to working closely with EC President von der Leyen and Commissioner Gabriel in order to champion research and innovation across Europe.
